Quick Label Generator, (C)1991, is owned and licensed by Edge Software, Inc.
(R)1991. Quick Label Generator may be freely distributed provided that if the
owner decides to use the program on a regular basis that owner will register
his or her copy with Edge Software, Inc. and include a $10 user fee.

Edge Software, Inc. will not be held responsible for damaged or lost info-
mation as a result of misuse or programming errors. Quick Label Generator
operates as an "as is" program.
Why Shareware?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Shareware is made possible by independant programmers. These programmers try
very hard to fill a void by providing useful programs that larger established
companies often overlook or do not feel will generate a profit.
In order for shareware programs to continue to grow and prosper independant
programmers, like Edge Software, Inc. ask you the end user, to provide some
form of financial renumeration so that we may continue to provide and expand
upon our software offerings.
If you think about it $10 is a reasonable request. Unlike larger software
houses we don't have any advertising costs, fancy presentation packages and
large staffs to contend with. Therefore, we can provide quality programs at
a fraction of the cost larger software houses ask for.
Next time you download from a bullentin board or obtain a shareware program
from a distributor please keep independent programmers in mind. If you like
and decide to use our programs on a regular basis your contributions keep the
shareware flowing.
Quick Label Generator Version 3.0 And It's Anomalies
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Currently, Quick Label does not operate as a true database (an explanation
will follow). As the program name implies, it is a quick label generator.
Quick Label, does however save files in a sequential format, using quotation
marks as its delimiter. You may use this sequential file to import your fields
to a database program like DBase IV, Alpha Four, Q&A or Professional Write
As best as we try to avoid errors within our programming sometimes these
errors raise their ugly heads. The programming language used for Quick Label
is Microsoft's Professional Development System Basic, Version 7.1.
Occasionally this version of basic produces wrong error codes. Sometimes the
user will get an "Out Of Paper" error when actually the error message intended
should be "Device Fault: Printer Not On-Line". We have found this anomoly only
occurs on older personal computers, especially those that operate at 4.77 Mhz
using 8088 chips, Tandy Systems and some Zenith Data Systems.
If the user owns a Zenith Data Systems beware of unexpected results. We have
tested numerous machines at the local university and each machine produced a
different outcome. Please note that none of these errors are catastrophic.
They only display error messages on the screen where we did not intend them to
be seen. Until we can obtain a Zenith Data System we will not try to fix this
problem; which at this time seems to be a system specific.
Quick Label Generator Overview
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Quick Label is a quick label generator for dot matrix printers. Its sole
purpose is to act as a typewriter and produce fast labels for four label types:
Address (Personal and Business)
Freestyle
Software (3 1/2" Diskettes and 5 1/4" Floppies)
VideoCassette
It's a very straight-foward program!
Quick Label is fast and easy to use. There are minimum setup requirements.
Basically, there are only two things the user needs to know: Which printer
port and size label he will be using (Quick Label only uses three label sizes).
With Quick Label there's no fuss with setting the borders, margins and lines
per label. Quick Label makes all the necessary adjustments by using pre-set
templates for each label type. Since Quick Label is not a database the
overall appearance is kept clean and tight.
Why isn't Quick Label a database? Edge Software, Inc. considered that
approach but decided that the name said it all: "Quick Label Generator".
Most people use throw away information. Information you're not likely to
retain.
We did, however, decided that this kind of thinking should not let us off
the hook so easily. We felt a compromise was needed.
Quick Label uses two types of files. One of these is a master [.DB] file
which keeps track of every input the user has saved. We felt that at some
point in the future the user may wish to import this file into a database
programs like DBase, Q&A or Professional File. And, there is the possibility
Quick Label may incorporate a true database features in a future version.
This all depends on whether or not Quick Label has developed a customer base.
The other file type is a temporary [.TMP] file. This file keeps track of
daily sessions and can be deleted as the user exits Quick Label or can be re-
named for future use (we suggest that all software and videocassette label
created in a [.TMP] format be renamed and saved in a separate directory).
Both these files are saved in a sequential format using quotation marks and
commas as its delimited form (we do have a version that saves all Address
labels in a WordPerfect delimited format).
Quick Label is divided into three sections. Each section works with each
other or can operate as separate entities.
The first part of Quick Label is the Input Level. This is where the user
can pick the type of label (Address, Freestyle, Software, VideoCassette)
he wants. After inputing each label the user can send the information
immediately to the printer or save all his entries and print later on.
The second part of Quick Label is the the Print File Level. Because Quick
Label saves two files the user can opt to print the entire Master file (which
uses the [.DB] extension) or print Today's Session (which uses the [.TMP]
extension. Remember that a [.DB] file keeps track of everything the user has
ever saved and a [.TMP] represents the current entries.
The third and final part of Quick Label is the Review Level. Review works
in conjunction with Today's Session.
Sometimes the user may have to leave his system for a short period of time
and upon returning he may wish to review his entries. This is made possible
by opening up the [.TMP] file briefly. Once the user has viewed his files
he may continue with his entries.
One more note before we get fully involved in explaining Quick Label.
Edge Software, Inc. would prefer that the user operate Quick Label from
within the QLABEL directory (or, the one chosen during installation).
Because we have designed Quick Label to operate as easily as possible without
asking the user to enter filenames or paths, filenames are automatically
created. This causes one minor dilemma. If the user executes Quick Label from
another directory Quick Label will create new files in the current directory.
If you move to another directory Quick Label creates another set of files.
This problem should not happen if the user engages the command QL (actually
QL.BAT) to start Quick Label. This file is built during installation and will
make the necessary adjustment to get the user into the QLABEL directory (or,
the one the user has chosen). By using the QL command unnecessary files will
not be poping up all over the system. Make sure the directory is in your PATH.
If the user does choose to run Quick Label by using the command QLABEL
(actually QLABEL.EXE) be aware that new files are created in each seperate
directory and the Master File [.DB] never changes. QLABEL.EXE is the actual
file that executes Quick Label.
Make sure to read the following screens to get a better understanding of
Quick Label.
Installing Quick Label Generator Version 3.0
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Quick Label is packaged in two formats. It can either be purchased on a
single 5 1/4" floppy disk, 3 1/2" diskette or it may be a ZIP file.
For those end-users who do not understand what a ZIP file is lets briefly
explain it.
Simply, a ZIP file is a file or group of files condensed (made smaller) down
to one file. Most, if not all, bullentin boards use this method to transfer
files over the telephone lines to save time.
If the user has a ZIP file, read any additionally README files before trying
to execute this program.
After unzipping QLABEL.ZIP please move all files, excluding QLABEL.ZIP, to a
floppy disk. After doing this install the program using INSTALL.EXE from
Drive A: or Drive B: only. Do not attempt an installation from another drive.
If the user has purchased Quick Label on a floppy disk all he must do is
insert the disk into either Drive A: or B: and type INSTALL.EXE, then answer
the questions the installation program asks.
Installing Quick Label
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Installing Quick Label -- Insert program disk into either Drive A: or B:.
To move to a new drive type at DOS Command Line. . .
A: [EnterKey] -or- B: [EnterKey]
The user should now be logged to the drive where the program disk is located.
For safe measure the user should type at DOS Command Line. . .
CD\ [EnterKey]
This brings the user to the root directory. Sometimes a previous disk in the
drive may show an obsolete sub-directory and confuse DOS.
Now type at DOS Command Line. . .
INSTALL [EnterKey]
Within a moment the install program should appear. The user should see two
questions.
Enter Source Drive ( one character only ) A or B »
Enter Target Drive ( one character only ) A -- E »
Enter one character (no semi-colon, please) per question.
Source drive is the drive where the program disk is located.
Target drive is the drive where the user is going to move his files to and
create a file named QL.BAT.
The target drive can also be the same as the source drive.
Next, the install program will ask the user where he would like to locate
his files. . .
Enter name of directory or Press Enter For Default »
If the user presses Enter without entering any information the install pro-
gram creates a directory named \QLABEL. If the user decides that another name
is needed enter a new name, but no longer than eight characters (see DOS manual
for file naming conventions).
The last question asked during installation is. . .
Copy files to new directory? (Y/N)
Take one last look at the setup and then answer the question. If (Y)es, all
files will be copied and a new file (QL.BAT) will be created.
Once the installation is complete the user will find himself located in the
new directory ready to run QL.BAT.
QL.BAT is the file that gets Quick Label up and running. However, the user
can execute Quick Label with QLABEL.EXE.
After the installation is done the user should include the new directory in
his path (if the user is using one in his AUTOEXEC.BAT file). A path is nothing
but a pointer to a directory. It allows the user to call up an executable
file from a another directory (see DOS manual for further explanation).
Running QL.BAT will always get the user back to the directory where Quick
Label is located. However, if the user decides to run Quick Label by executing
QLABEL.EXE be aware that new database files will be created in whatever
directory the user is located and the original master database will never see
the new entries.
A Tour Of Quick Label Generator (Setup and Main Menu)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
When first loading Quick Label there are several items the user must get
through. Like most programs an introduction screen appears letting the user
know who created the program and who to contact if the user has any questions
(provided the user has registered Quick Label).
The original Quick Label did not allow the user to choose another printer
port assignment. Version 3.0 does. Most users will accept the default of
LPT1. This is a parallel port. Some users have multiple printers and will
need to redirect their printing output.
Quick Label uses two methods for choosing a menu item. The user can either
scroll or hot key an item. Scrolling an item is accomplished by using the
directional keys, depending on the menu type (horizontal or vertical). Hot
keying can be done by simply pressing the high-lighted key of each selection.
The high-lighted key is usually the first letter of an item. To pick a printer
port either scroll or hot key to that item and press the Enter Key.
After choosing a printer port a window appears to remind the user to put his
printer on-line. Put the printer on-line and again press the Enter Key.
The last window to appear is a label selection menu. Most users will accept
the default of 1 Inch. Quick Label uses only three types of label sizes.
1 Inch (actually 15/16" x 3" or 15/16" x 4-1/2")
1 1/2 Inch (actually 1-15/16" x 4-1/2")
2 3/4 Inch (actually 2 3/4" squared)
Again, scroll or hot key the item and press the Enter Key. In another part
of the manual the user will learn how to change the items while the program is
in use.
While the 1 Inch and 1 1/2 Inch labels can be used for any type of label the
2 3/4 Inch squared has a specific use. These labels are for 3 1/2" floppy
diskettes only. If the user decides he needs labels for these diskettes he
will have the option of changing the default. After using this option the
default will revert back to its original setup (input level only).
If this sounds cumbersome it isn't. The user is always three keystrokes
away from getting to the main menu. And now that we're there lets get Quick
Label working!
The main menu opens up two windows after the initial setup. A selection
window for choosing the type of label you need, printing a previous file or
sending a test print to the printer for alignment. The other window is a
Stat window which provides the user information about his current status.
┌────────────────────────────────────┐

│ │ │ │

│ │ │ │
│ └────────┘ │
└────────────────────────────────────┘
If the user is not sure where he is, in relationship to the program, he can
always check the Stat window.
On some menu items an arrow will follow. This indicates to the user that
another menu window will appear or a question needs a response.
Once an item has been selected, depending upon that item, another window will
appear. If a label type has been selected an input window will open. Once
inside an input window you cannot escape without entering some form of inform-
ation. Why? Over The Edge felt that end-users to often, haphazardly, use
escape as a convenient way to end a procedure. Without thinking their inform-
ation is lost and needs to be re-inputed. Just enter anything and when the
inputing is through just select Exit as the means to end a procedure.
Let's give a brief overview of the main menu. The first four items on the
menu are the label types (Address, Freestyle, Software and VideoCassette).
This is followed by Print File (which allows the user to print either the
Master file or a Temporary file (Today's Session)).
The next item is Align Label. This item is the first choice when the main
menu appears. We felt the user should get into a routine of sending a test
print to the printer when he first uses Quick Label. How often have we sent
information to the printer and had to do again becuase the paper was not
aligned?
The last item is End Program which can be scrolled, hot keyed or brought up
with the Escape Key.
A Tour Of Quick Label Generator (Selecting A Label Type)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
There are four type of labels Quick Label uses (Address, Freestyle, Software
and VideoCassette). Depending on which type the user chooses an input window
will open. If the user selects either Address or Software an additional
window will appear asking for more information on the type of label needed.
┌────────────────────────────────────┐

└────────────────────────────────────┘
The user should look at the Final Draft window. If it appears correct save
the information by pressing (Y)es and then press the Enter Key. The Message
Bar will ask. . .
Save This Entry? Yes No Exit
If the user chooses (N)o the Final Draft window clears and will be asked. . .
Revise This Entry? Yes No Exit
By answering (Y)es the cursor returns to the first line of input. The user
can now begin re-typing or use the Escape Key to clear an entire line. If the
user wants to retain a line pressing the Enter Key will move the cursor to the
next field.
By answering (No) the Final Draft And Input Windows clear allowing the user
to enter a new label.
There are four questions the Input window will always ask depending on your
answers. . .
Save This Entry? Yes No Exit
If (Y)es the entry is saved. The next question is. . .
Print Label Now? Yes No
If (N)o the user is asked. . .
Revise This Entry? Yes No Exit
If the user answers (Y)es to. . .
Print Label Now? Yes No
The user is asked. . .
How many? [ ]
The user can enter from 0 to 99. Any other character will be ignored.
The only time the user can escape an input screen is when a menu includes an
Exit statement (use 0 for How Many? if you wish to bypass the print).
The user does not have to print any label immediately. He can print either
the entire Master [.DB] file or the Temporary [.TMP] file at another time.
Another window that appears with the Final Draft is the Font window. Most of
the time this window will display Nrml (Normal). On the Software and Video-
Cassette labels the first line of each uses WIDE. This is double wide
characters. If the user prints 2 3/4" squared labels the font size is Comp
(Compressed).
A Tour Of Quick Label (Selecting A File)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The main menu includes a Print File selection. Quick Label creates two types
of files. A Master file and Temporary File.
The Master file keeps track of all entries that were saved. The Temporary
files keeps track of the current session. The user can delete this file at the
end of his work or save the file (outside the program) under a different name.
If the user chooses Print File a second menu will appear. This menu contains
┌────────────────────────────────────┐ the Master [.DB] files and an option
│ ┌────────┐ ┌────────┐ │ to print Today's Session [.TMP] files.

A Tour of Quick Label (Aligning The Label)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
When Quick Label displays the main menu the first scroll bar to appear is
Align Label. We would like the user to get into the habit of aligning his
label before doing anything else with the program.
Most of us know how frustrating it is to send information to the printer only
to do it again because we did not take the time to make the proper alignment.
Align Label prints out a test label (which advertises our company). Use these
labels for any correspondance you may have with Over The Edge Software.
A Tour Of Quick Label (Changing Printer Ports and Label Sizes)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
When the user first starts Quick Label he is asked to select a printer port
and label size.
Over The Edge realizes that at some point you may wish to change these
conditions. Anytime during the program you may change the printer port assign-
ment or label size by using either the F2 and F3 key.
The F2 key represents the printer port assignment.
The F3 key represents the label size.
Once the user has pressed an F key using the Up or Down key will scroll
through a selection of assignments and sizes.
The only time the F keys are not available is during inputing. Once the user
gets to the. . .
Save This Entry? Yes No Exit
. . .the F keys are available once more.
A Tour Of Quick Label (Label Inputing)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Quick Label tries to make the necessary adjustments to assure quality output
to the printer. An important item the user should keep in mind is skipping
fields when inputing.
Example: When inputing an Address Label for a business there are several
extra fields added. These fields are an "Attention:" and a second
"Address". The user may not use one or the other. Whatever the
decision Quick Label will make an adjustment. However, because
there are many combinations involved Over The Edge needed some
control over inputing. We felt that common sense dictated an
Address label needed a Person's Name or Company Name. To shorten
these combinations Quick Label will immediatedly let the user know
if the field he is using needs information.
Our suggestions. Try skipping fields in any order. Skip multiple fields and
see how the label will appear in the Final Draft window. The cannot harm any-
thing. He will always have the option to revise his entry.
Fields allowed to be skipped. . .
Address(Business): Attention
Address Line 1
Address Line 2
Address(Personal): Address Line 1
Address Line 2
Freestyle: All Fields
Software: Version
Serial Number
Disk Number
Disk Total
VideoCassette: Title Line 2

Rated
Comments
As mentioned, skipping a field will not affect the output of a Quick Label
label.
Software Labels: When the user looks at the software input he may feel it's
necessary to input every field. This is not so! Some software programs do not
have a serial number or version number. If it doesn't exist don't use the
fields. The software Input uses several combinations for displaying an output
to the printer. Try skipping a Version Number, Serial Number, Disk Number,
Disk Total or all of them. Each of them produces different results.
If the user is only interested in the total number of disks in a set the
output will be. . .
Disk Set Total = Number
. . .if the user is only concerned about is placement order it appears as. . .
Disk 2
. . .if the user is concerned about both placement and total it appears as. . .
Disk 2 of 8
Experiment with the fields; nothing will be harmed.
Some programs do not have a Disk Title (i.e., System Disk, Program Disk. . .)
Over The Edge Felt a disk title was needed. If your original program does not
use a title use either a name like Program Disk or System Disk. This helps the
user identify the floppy if multiple disks are included with the program.
One more item about software labels. The first field, Program Name, has a
field length of 15. This is because the print is double wide characters.
For further examples look at the SOFTWARE.DOC file.
A Tour of Quick Label (Setting Up Labels)

Quick Label's starts printing on Column 0 and ends at Column 30.

Ordering Labels From Quill Corporation
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Quick Label uses three label sizes.
1 Inch ( 15/16 X 3 )
1 1/2 Inch ( 1 7/8 X 4 1/2 )
2 3/4 Inch Squared ( For 3 1/2 Inch Diskettes Only )
The first two ( 1 Inch and 1 1/2 Inch ) can be purchased at any office
supply store from 100 to 5000 labels per unit box.
Over The Edge spent at lot of time trying to locate the 2 3/4 Inch squared
labels and could only find them through Quill Corporation. We found Quill
Corporation quite wonderful. They helped us with anything we needed and told
them we would pass along our approval to others through our documentation.
Since 2 3/4 Inch squared are hard to come by you can order directly from
Quill Corporation. Use the ordering form provided on the ORDER.DOC file
enclosed with this program.
